The importance of choosing iodized salt.
Iodine is an essential ingredient for healthy brain development in fetuses and young children. Iodine deficiency can have a negative impact on the health of pregnant women and children, as well as economic productivity and quality of live (WHO).
In Indonesia, Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) is still a national problem (Kompas). Based on the data from the Ministry of Health in 2013, 15-25% of school-age children (6-12 years), women of childbearing age, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers are at risk of iodine deficiency (Ministry of Health). It is estimated that as many as 140 million children in Indonesia lose 10-15 IQ points due to iodine deficiency.
One of the causes of this problem is that more than 50 percent of household salt in Indonesia is not sufficiently iodized (<30 ppm iodine in the form of KIO3). (Ministry of Health)
